Chicago Drug Abuse, Addiction,
and Couples Counselor
Jake Colton LCSW CADC
Jake Colton is a Chicago certified alcohol and drug counselor (CADC) and relationship therapist. In addition to providing addiction and couples counseling he teaches a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counseling course and Group Counseling course at DePaul University, leads workshops throughtout Chicago on topics of addiction, substance abuse, and relationship issues, and runs several groups at Open Avenue.
Experience and Specialities
Jake has worked with adults and adolescents with addictions to cocaine, heroin, alcohol, crystal meth, prescription pills (e.g. vicodin, adderall, etc), and sex within an inpatient hospital, several community mental health agencies, and private practice settings.
Jake has extensive experience counseling couples with addiction issues, and specializes in helping them resolve issues of trust, intimacy, communication, friendship, spirituality, and sexual satisfaction.
Jake also has a particular interest and expertise in drawing men into the therapuetic process. He understand that men tend to be especially resistant to trying therapy due to their natural tendency for independence and figuring/fixing things on their own. He enjoys helping men to experience and explore the benefits of "thinking out loud," tolerating emotion, creatively contributing to relationships, and living life fully and in the moment.
Treatment Philosophy
Jake has been trained in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and draws upon the humanistic, existential, strengths-based, and client-centered approaches (e.g. Carl Rogers) as the foundation for his work.
Jake takes a non-judgemental approach towards addiction and in particular he specializes in helping people for whom non-traditional approaches to addiction and drug treatment have been ineffective and overly constrictive(e.g. AA). Some of his clients want to stop their substance use completely while others would like to better manage their substance use or keep it in check so the use doesn't spiral into abuse and addiction.
Education and Training
Jake graduated from the University of Utah MagnaCum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology.
He obtained his Masters degree in clinical social work and counseling from The University of Chicago.
Jake participated in a year-long intensive Motivational Interviewing program lead by Summerson Carr PhD, Stanley McCracken PhD LCSW, and Scott Peterson LCSW CADC and now has lead Motivational Interviewing trainings for counseling students and mental health professionals.
